Hey guys, I just want to start out by saying that if it were not for this site i would still be completely lost on my 6.0. Im going to start tearing down my truck today to do the head gaskets. Im going to upgrade the turbo drain tube, the stc connector, oil rail plug that has a tendency to leak, the oil cooler if its bad and last but i believe the most important im going to delete the entire egr system. Ive already got a coolent filtration system by diesel site on it. ARP studs are going back in it. Can you guys think of anything ive missed if so please inform. Its a 2005 F-350 CC DRW and i use it to tow a 12500# fifth wheel. I dont run any programer but was considering an Edge Platnuim with juice monitor. Dont care much about performance just want a reliable truck like my 97 7.5 liter, best engine ever built!!! By the way does anybody know if i can by a complete upper engine gasket and o-ring kit or do I have to buy it all individually?
I would recommend changing out the oil cooler while you have it torn down. I just back flushed mine when I first installed my EGR delete. 18000 miles later the cooler let go big time. It is a huge mess. You can get one on Ebay for around $200.
Regarding a tuner, the general concensus here is SCT. I like mine.
Everything sounds good except your choice in tuner and you'll need gauges. You are going to want to get something that allows for custom tuning. Products like the juice(and any of it's versions) are not good for the engine or the tranny. At this point, your engine might survive it, but your tranny would not. If you go the SCT route, go with the X3, don't do the LiveWire, that product is still 50/50 on getting one that will last. If you want the digital OBD-II style "gauges" then get either the DashDAQ or the Insight, both can be had for deals if you do some digging.
No aftermarket air filter at your stage in the game. You will not get any benefit from it except as a placebo. If you get to where I'm at then you can benefit from it, but tuning alone won't get you there.
You'll want to upgrade your exhaust to a 4" if you haven't already done so. Don't go higher then 4"s as that would be counter productive until you upgrade sticks and turbo(or atleast upgrade the sticks bare min. and even that is pushing it for actually needing a bigger exhaust).
As to the 7.3 worshipping, I had one didn't care for it. This truck is hands down better then the 7.3. I have had my issues, but it never left my stranded, the 7.3 had some very very scary moments with oncoming traffic and that's not fun hauling ~16k worth of horse flesh.
