Can I get some help on engine condition? Please

I have a 2000 F250 with the 7.3 with 167,000 miles on it and was wondering if anyone can give any input on the condition of its engine. I bought the truck 4 years ago when it had 105,000 miles on it for my company to be used as a errand truck . Unfortunately it became the little "step child" and It has had very little attention. Now that times are hard it has become my main means of transportation. But the bright side is I have been spending hours pouring over this awesome forum and I am excited about fixing it up! At first it was very hard to start in the morning but thanks to this forum I replaced the GPR and now the glow plugs are working good. It runs great and has good power. I know the oil is WAY overdue for a change but It has not used any oil in the last 600 miles since I have been driving it. (I cant find any record of when the oil was changed last.) Still very hard starting exp. in the mornings and it sometimes gets the "romps" first thing. I figure that’s from the dirty oil? <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
My main question is regarding the amount of smoke or blow by coming from the oil filler tube.<o></o>
I saw on powerstrokehelp.com that allot of smoke coming from the oil filler means that the engine is wore out. How much smoke is too much? How much smoke comes from your 7.3 if any? Any other advice? Just worried that I will soon have to dump a ton of money that I don't have in the truck. THANKS for all the work everyone puts in this board!

Welcome to FTE, glad to have yaa aboard. One of the most important things is changing the oil on a regular schedule, usually 5000 on regular diesel rated oil like Rotella. If your a bit lax on changing it often, you should try the synthetic Rotella or other rated syn. diesel oil, you'll get an extra thousand miles or so, I do mine at 8000-10,000 but 8 would be good. As far as the blowby, with your truck running, pull your oil cap and flip it upside down, if it just rattles off from the vibration you should be ok. If it puffs and blows off of sorts, then you may have problems on the horizon. Just a little bit of blowby, like a mist is ok but if it puffs and chugs out, not good. There's some videos around, somebody will post up.

Welcome to FTE. If you think the oil is past due for a change, CHANGE IT NOW. Engine oil is the life blood of this motor and the injectors. You should probably change the fuel and air filter while you're at it.

Ignore that powerstroke help guy and just pay attention to us. I'll admit his videos might be helpful to those who don't know what any of the parts are under the hood, but we can give you pictures of anything if needed.

To answer your question about smoke out the fill tube, my truck has 316,000 miles on the original engine. When I had around 260,000 miles on the engine, I decided to experiment with different diesel rated motor oils. I ran each oil for 5,000 miles then sent a sample of the used oil into a lab for analysis to see if one oil did better than the other in my old engine. What I noticed is different motor oils smoked a different amount, and some smoked (and smelled) much worse after a few thousand miles. Some did not smoke (or smell) too bad.

Change your oil and just ignore the smoke. If you have pressure (blow by) coming out of the fill tube then you need to worry. If there's no pressure but just lots of smoke, ignore it, you're fine for another couple of hundred thousand miles.
