my 77 f100 battery tray was rusted out. i got a better one, did some filler and finishing and it's ready to go in. the area the tray mounts to has an area about 3" that's rusted through, in the corner, edge area. i was planning to use fiber glass and a patch kit to fix it.
is there a better way?
i was worried about getting access to all the nucks and crannies to finish it right. is there an easy way or is it just knuckle scrapping time?
If you plan on keeping the truck you may want to remove the fender and inner fender to expose the radiator support. While the parts are out you can make the correct repairs by welding in patches. You can probably cut corners with filler, but the results will look questionable and may not hold up over time. Patching over rust will slow things down but the rot will prevail and it comes back with a vengance.
Although I haven't repaired mine yet, what I did do was got a plastic battery box with a lid for a boat and bolted it into place where the battery normally sits.
