1983 F600 Dump trailer

I am new to the forum and it certainly appears like a great place to find out information. I have a Superduty F250 with the V10 engine but recently located a nice 1983 F600 with a dump. However, cannot find out a lot of information on it. The sticker says GVR of 16,500 with rear axle at 11,000 and front at 5,500. It has the 370 2V engine with the PTO on the manual transmission to operate the hydraulic's. What I would like to know is what what this truck weighs, the actual payload, and the GCWR capacity? The truck was used by a hospital and graveyard for dirt and plowing, has low miles, and garaged in doors (no rust). Local Ford dealer was not very helpful.. Thoughts?

I personally do not know much about the larger trucks. Someone else may know, but most of the info in this forum is going to be around the pickups.

I have driven a few trucks that size, and most of them require a CDL, since they will gross over 26,000 lbs. Your GVR sounds about right for the max load you can haul, since the single axle dump trucks I have driven usually have a max of around 8 tons, so 16,500 sounds about right.

Thanks for the information. From a few other truck listing I did notice that with 16.5 GVR that payload seems about right at 8,000 LBS. Therefore, the curbside weight would be in the range of 8.5-9K or so. No luck on the GCWR but I would want to avoid the CDL requirements which means the top limit is a 10K trailer so that I can stay under the 26K combined limit. Togehter with truck and trailer I still should be able to have a payload between 15K-16K which is plenty for a non CDL. Any other advice would be appreciated.

You might want to try asking in the towing section, lotsa BIG 5th wheelers in there. I can tell you for sure that my sig truck weighs in a little over 8k empty, you may be a little low on your estimate

I don't that's going to be possible if you are going to use it commercially or for hire. That's like buying a 18 wheeler tractor and putting a flatbed on it and telling them you are only going to haul groceries on it. You can certainly drive it without a CDL, but don't get pulled over without a good story about personal use only.

Thanks. I just posted in the towing section. At least in Wisconsin the CDL law says:

Commercial driver licenses (CDL) are required to operate vehicles that:
  • Weigh over 26,000 pounds, determined by the highest of the following weights:
    • manufacturer’s gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR)
    • manufacturer’s gross combination weight rating (GCWR)
    • actual weight
    • registered weight
With this vehicle I believe I will be at 26,000 but I really don't know for sure but since I will not tow more than 10K I thought I would be ok. Most of what I would be doing though is under a farm business where it also states that movement of farm equipment over short distances is exempt from a CDL. However, deliver of logs to the sawmill while under the farm business is certainly commerical but still under the 26K level. I guess I am unclear on this law?

I know you can't find the tag, but it's going to be on there somewhere. Look on the glove box lid possibly. A truck that big is going to be over 26,000. Look on the title for the truck also. The tag or title is going to be your problem with the law.

You didn't elaborate much on the logging thing, but if it's part of the farm, and the profits/expenses from the logging are going to go through the farm books, then it certainly would still be considered farm use.

I would contact the DMV or the Highway Patrol for a clearer answer and actually speak to someone who is up to par on the resources.

I will try the DMV in the morning about the CDL and see what they say. I do have the VIN number on the truck so maybe they can tell me something. Will likewise try a larger FORD dealer.

Unfortunately, the current title doesn't list anything regarding towing capacity. This truck currently doesn't have a hitch so (original) owner only worried about the GVR of 16,500 and did not need a CDL. I already checked every possible place on this truck but only identificaiton sticker was on the driver side door where it is listed front & rear axle lbs and the GVR of 16,500. It really is starting to be a mystery truck.

When I can not answer something, I refer people to the Highway Patrol. They are the ones who would likely stop you and cite you, so why not get the final answer from them?

Hello --F600

Hello Ahlkey , try posting in the large truck forum for quicker more in depth responses. All the folks here are great, but like all of us only have limited time. What I mean is we don't all read all the different forums. I'm sure you will be able to get lots of info/ideas and even a few answers. HaHaHa. Good luck and keep us in the loop. OBCB

Talked to an good person at the DMT and they reconfirmed that in Wisconsin no CDL is required as long as the total is below 26,000 lbs. This applies even if used for commerical or personal activity. They also told me from the VIN number that the range of the truck for GVR ranges between 16,500 - 19,500. I am looking at the lighter version at 16,500 so as long as I tow below 10,000lbs on the trailer and not load more than 7,000 or so on the truck, and stay under the combined 26,000 lbs I am ok. Seems the only way to know for sure is just weigh the truck to find out.

Hey there Ahlkey! Welcome to the forums! I can't really help you with info on your truck as that big stuff is WAY out of my league. What I do want to know, however is if the hospital and graveyard you mentioned in your opening post are part of the same organization. If so, please let us know the name of the hospital so we can all stay the HECK away frome there!!! Ha! Have fun with your truck and steer clear of the law just to be on the safe side and whatever you do STAY OUT OF THAT HOSPITAL!!!
