Help! Just bought a 97 expy xlt 2wd 4.6L on 6/30. 2 days after I bought it, I started having trouble getting it to shift out of Park. Took it to the dealership and they replaced "brake switch". Now it is doing it again, only 5 days later. It takes about 15 minutes of monkeying with it to get it out of Park. (I know all about pressing brake down when shifting and using parking brake, it doesn't make any difference) Has anyone else had this problem or have a clue what it might be?
Are you parking on a hill? Do you use your parking brake? I had a situation in which I was in a hurry. I parked on a hill and did not use the parking brake (very unusual for me and I try and always use it). Anyway, when I came back to the truck, it took forever to get it out of park. That was the only time that I have had that issue.
I read some where (and yes, it might have been another board) that others have had the same issue. When one parks on a hill and does not use the parking brake, the veh will roll up or down (depending on if the nose is going up the hill or down the hill) on the transmission. It does make it harder to get the veh. out of park.
So, if on a hill not only turn your wheels towards the curb (ok a throw back to drivers ed ) but also make sure and use the parking brake.
If not on a hill, hell I don't know what it could be!
I had the same thing happen to me yesterday. I backed out of the garage, and forgot to get something from the house, so I put in park on our driveway which is on a small incline and didn,t set the parking brake. Man was it hard to get out of park! I will remember to set the brake next time.

Good idea, but I would have a question (I am not really that educated with the operations of vehicles, but want to learn). If it was the cable, would he still be able to turn the truck off and take the key out of the ignition? Is the switch that allows for that in the tranny or on the indicator?
I know it's not the hill thing, happens on flat land too. I always set the parking brake. Here's the funny thing, I can put the ignition in "accessory" (lights & power but no engine), move the shifter into neutral, start it and then move it into gear. I think it must be a short in the ignition if it will go into gear with the engine off but not running. Anyone out there have any ideas? I'm taking it in todayso we'll see.
