Im looking at used superdutys on dealer lots (xlt diesel s/c) 2006-2008. 40k or under. everybody wants $34000-$38000, does this sound high???? sems like sed trucks/trade ins are going for a bundle. what kind of room you think most dealers will take off the top with a little haggling? im sure they didnt give near that on a trade.
A lot depends on you. Are you needign to by NOW? Then be prepared to pay. Do you have time? Then you can explore. If it is the first case, offer 5k less an see what they say. You will quickly find out were the real market is.
If you have time, then find a truck you like and give them a low offer and fight for it, even a bit unreasonably. If you have done a lot of searching, you should know what a low offer in your area will be. If you haven't then you need to do that research first. You will no doubt lose the first one you try for. You might get the second one after you learn from the first. By that point you should have a good idea what is real and how to push the sellers. Use that and find the deal that makes you happy.
2 caveats: 1- If you are impossible to please, well, good luck. 2-If you are looking for anything other than a crewcab shortbed diesel SD, then your selection will be very limited.
The pricing you cite sounds sightly high, but not crazy, and a lot depends on the local market.
do your homework. i bought a used truck private sale a few months back. i was very specific in my search wanted a crew cab long bed diesel 4x4 split bench front seat full bench rear a/c and power windows and doors. nothing else extra. manual or auto didn't matter. thought it would take a while but found one quick in the right price. if you aren't specific it eats up a lot of time. and force a dealer to play ball. they give low trade in value to the last guy jack it close to new price then act like your stealing from them. i bought a used exploder for the wife in august. took two weeks of calls from the sales guy before he hit my price. the only hit is his commission. if he's good he'll move volume to make up for it. good luck show us the pics when you find one.
For single cab pickups, that may be close, depending on other detail factors, The single cab pickups are valued based on their expected remaining life and are harder to come by used unless they are salvaged rebuilds or completely worn out.

It seems a bit high for this economy and with fuel prices rising..
It is hard to tell if the prices are high without knowing all the equipment and other variables..
I would say 34k-38k is about 5k more than normal..
If you have the specs on the vehicles go to www.kbb.com (Kelley Blue Book) or Edmunds.com and see what they call for the retail value.
That will give you a good idea of what pricing should be reasonable.
I would definitely do more research before paying that kind of price. Check out both AutoTrader.com and E-Bay Motors. You will find lots of trucks for sale by both private parties and dealers. Even if you don't buy one from these sites you will know more about what comparable trucks sell for and can haggle better with the dealer.
