If your fan clutch is locked up it takes quite a bit of diesel to turn it too.
Its not fully locked, but from what I've read, in cold weather, it should free wheel and the fan should hardly spin at all. Well mine turns with every turn of the motor. I does spin itself down when the motor is shut off, but under cold conditions its also continues to turn. Turning it by hand on a cold motor the clutch is working, but its much stiffer than I think it should be. You think its worth the effort of having it replaced?
It will have some resistance if it is comepletely free it's bad, and watching it at an idlethey seem to turn with the motor especially when you first crank it. If you are not getting an airplane sounding noise at 2000 rpm's I wouldn't worry about it.
The bearing is what locks them up if there is no slack and you can turn it without feeling a rough bearing I would leave it alone. It is actually more common for them to leak and not lock up when they need to than lock up all the time.
I have a 88 7.3 IDI and the temp gauge does not work. It never moves off cold, only when starting it jumps to the middle of normal and once it starts it goes back down to cold and just stays there I have pulled the temp gauge wire off the sensor and grounded it against the block and the gauge moved. I did the same thing to the temp light wire and it just moved the gauge, the light did not come on. Does this means the sensor is bad?
