I have a 78F100 302/c4 that I have been doing over, and I would like to swap out the C4 for an AOD.
would this be a good swap to get a tranny with overdrive?
what would I need to do this?
what would be the best donor?
the truck is just a street truck with a fairly mild built roller 302,any input you have will be greatly appreciated.
AOD is not known for it's strength and robustness, but the aftermarket has taken care of that. They can be found in the Bronco and F150 for the truck version of the tranny and a good year to start with is the 87-90 range. The only trouble with bolting up an AOD is the TV cable that goes from the tranny to the throttle linkage. These need fairly precise adjustments and you may have to fabricate up something to mount it.
Others can assist with that. I've only worked on factory installations.
thanks etachell, they use a tv cable, same as chevs 700R4,I will look for one from a a truck from those years, think a friend has one,a rebuild and new converter will likely be going in as well.thanks again.
I happen to have one here that is out of an 89 Bronco. Let me know if you want pictures or numbers.
Also, you might have to modify the rear cross member and mount to make it work. The AOD came in 2wd and 4wd versions with the difference in the tail cone and output shaft. Many cars of the came years also had the AOD. The overall design and workings are similar, but there are several detail differences. The parts do seem to be interchangeable in my experience. I know the toqrue converters have different stall speeds, but will interchange. The Truck pan is also different, as well as the til cone. I'm sure the valve bodies and servo is also different, but again interchangeable.
The TV cables adjust and work the same on all AOD types.
