I recently bought a 79 f150 custom with a 400 engine in it. The truck has been sitting for several years but with a little tune up seems to run fairly good. The problem im running into is when the 4 barrel starts to open up the truck starts sputtering and cutting out. Just need to know some things to check or if I should upgrade to a new carb with an electric choke since mine is not working properly and what carb would be a good choice to go with. I've heard that an edelbrock 600 would be a good choice. thanx
Is the truck fully up to operating temp when you open the secondaries and get the problem? Choke should have nothing to do with the secondary operation, other than maybe locking them out until the choke is fully open. If it is a Motorcraft 4350, it's a pretty simple carb to take apart and clean, even if you don't change out any parts. Might have some gummed up passages that a little soaking and compressed air will take care of. Or get a rebuild kit and go all out, 'prolly $30-$50 or so. The Eddys are nice carbs right out of the box generally, some of the high performance guys have gripes about tuneability, but they all run Holley's for that reason. I'm running 2 of the 600 Eddy's on street cars, and they are fine for that, one is my RV. You can get a used one on Ebay for under $100 and a quick cleaning will usually put you in business, if not, Edelbrock has kits. The Eddy is an old Carter design, I believe. Hope this helps,
