tranny question

78 250 custom with 4gear

I just got it and haven't worked with old ford manual tranny yet, it appears that the bearing/seal/whatever on the rear of the transmission is leaking (evident by spray all over the bottom of the truck)

I need to get a pic but to try and describe this, its where the transmissions connects to the ujoint/driveshaft its that bearing that I assume is leaking

there are about ~6 bolts around this bearing that make it look like I can just take that part off?

question for the exact part name and if I am handy with tools can I replace it my self? can I just pop off the ~6bolts that I see pull the drive shaft and then yank out that part and the problematic bearing? buy a new one (what ever it is) pop it in with the old freezer/heat trick if its stuck and be on my way?

Do you mean the bearing or the seal?

There may not be a thing wrong with the bearing. I'd think it would be the output shaft seal that's the problem. Remove the housing like you said, clean everything up really good, and replace the seal. I think that these have a gasket around the housing that you will need to replace also.

You will also want to thoroughly clean and inspect the yoke itself where it goes into the housing and makes contact with the seal. If it is very rough, gouged, or scored, you may want to look at replacing it. It will tear seals up. If it looks OK, hit it with an emery cloth anyway to make sure it is nice and smooth before you put it back in. I normally put a little oil on the seal and the yoke so they glide rather than grab during installation.

Good luck!

awesome thanks for the name of the part! I will try to clean it up, I am not sure what version of the transmission I have yet but my local auto parts has the part for 9bucks if I need a new one and cleaning wont do it.

I love these trucks.

and this forum thanks !

It's most likely a Borg/Warner T-18.

You could confirm or deny that by posting the trans code on the warranty plate located on the driver's door.

Most T-18's have a PTO cover on the passenger side, and is marked Borg/Warner on the casing on the driver side.

Seriousley doubt you damaged the bearing, they are a considerable size. Like Bowtie said, probably a seal.

There will be a vent on the top of the tranny. Make sure it is open as they will stop up and cause the seals to leak.
