Small valve heads mean lower peak rpm and thus lower hp. Still provide good low rpm torque and good mpg. One of their bigger problems is with their combustion chambers being pretty large, resulting in low compression.
I am trying something by decreasing comb. chamber volume by a fair amount on some C1TE heads (small valve). Milling them .030 should bring their volume down from 76 cc to approx. 70 cc. With nothing else done to the block CR will be 8.3 to 8.5 with steel gaskets. It will be interesting. Objective is a little better torque, hp and mpg. Just need to get the machine shop off their ***.
Big valve heads mean higher peak rpm and more hp. Most often they are coupled with more aggressive cams. If CR isnt paid attention, decrease in lower end torque and responsiveness can occur. Almost always mpg decreases.
There are many nuances a person can get into. Higher rpms require more airflow through the entire intake circuit, meaning carb, intake manifold, head intake ports, and valves.
