Ok here it goes. i came back from my fathers today and i didnt have any oil pressure. i shut it off and let is sit then restart it it would regain oil pressure. i would drive a bit and the pressure would drop. but then i did that agian and i didnt loose any oil presssure. the oil level is a little above the maxium point on the dip stick. any thoughts on about what it could be would be greatly apreciated.
Assuming you are looking at your factory electronic gauge, I would install a mechanical oil pressure gauge before doing anything else. It sounds to me like it could be a faulty sending unit or possibly the gauge itself.
The only other possible thing that could be causing this is if you have someting floating around in your oil pan that blocks your oil pump pickup screen such as a large piece of gasket or a blob of silicone. When you shut the engine off, the suction is lost and the blockage dropps off and stays off until it gets sucked up again sometime when the engine is running.
Sorry, poor troubleshooting. It is getting late. But try the mechanical gauge and see what it does.
If it is not knocking or pinging then you have oil pressure.Know if you lost pressure and it srarted to knock then something would be wrong but it is most likly the gauge...
