I have an 82 bronco with a 93 f-150 351w, still has the serp belt but has been converted to a carb motor with a 4bbl. It stalls randomly...but only on the highway. I had it off road for a good 4 hours today and didnt have a single problem. I got back on the highway and got up to 55 and it just died, (speed doesnt seem to be a factor, does it randomly). I have an aftermarket tach hooked to the neg coil wire, Ive noticed that when it dies, the tach drops hard to 0. even if I down shift and drop the clutch to try to push start it back up, the motor revs from the combustion but the tach stays at 0...then just as random as it shut off, it turns right back on and the tach and engine comes to life. Somtimes I have to get all the way stopped and actually crank it. I no longer have a key start, I put the ignition on 2 15amp switches and a push start button. It had this problem before tho. No other accesories seem to be affected, radio, heater, and lights all still work when it does it.
I had the same problem in my 83 F250 also 351W, but always at an idle (never did figure that part out), hot or cold made no difference.
I found the problem accidentally - it was the plug on the wires into the distributor. It was slowly getting worse - 50/50 chance of cutting out at an intersection or lights etc.
It looked clean internally & was coated with dielectric grease, but if you wriggled the wires it would cut out- or if it had already cut out, wriggling it would then let it be restarted. During these 'cut-out' periods, it also caused the timing to be affected & would kick back on the starter when you tried to restart, but once it did start, timing & starting would be fine until the next time it played up.
Once the plug was cut out & the joint soldered, the problem was gone.
Thanks Ken, sounds like thats whats up, I get kickback on the starter right after it dies as well. Then have to hold the gas to the floor to get it to re-start. Strange that yours did it at idle, and mine only at highway speeds...although if it wasnt strange I suppose it wouldnt be an electrical issue.
