Sunday I went on a cache hunt called "The real Lost World" (GCZD42)
It was quite the day. Ended up being around 3 miles round trip. Had a blast for sure.

Virginia Geocaches

Here is an interesting article in a Virginia News paper, I thought it was interesting that the "Geotrail" was set up partly by the National Park Service.

That is interesting, because it was my understanding that National Parks were out of bounds for caches and against NPS regulations. I guess the Service has decided to try it out.

Geocaching.com went over 1,000,000 active caches on March 8th.

So I've only got 999,880 to go.

The missus and I did some caching around Big Pine this last weekend. We stumbled upon this radiotelescopic array up in the White Mountains, not too far from the Ancient Bristlecone forest area.

Known as CARMA, this web site has the details of the project:
CARMA public pages

We were free to drive around between the dishes. They consist of 3 different sizes and designs.

The cache was on a hill overlooking the site. This shot is from the cache site.

Interesting how you can be out in the middle of nowhere and come across stuff like that.

That's not too far from Deep Springs, is it?

That place looks really nice. Is there cabins or do you need a RV or camper?

We pull a travel trailer. We camped on Big Pine creek, which is on the eastern front of the Sierra's. The dish site is in the White Mountains. Between the Sierra range and the White range is the Owens Valley. All of this is about 15 miles south of Bishop.

It's amazing how tough it can be to decide on a new hand held GPS.

Bill,

I show you as having taken the hilltop photo in the direction of 187 degrees True.

I ended up buying a DeLorme PN-40. Compared to my old Magellan Sportrak, this new one is a super computer. It doesn't have a built in camera, but I just bought a new camera anyway. The ability to layer topo maps over aerial photos is a big plus for us. Being able to DL unlimited maps/photos for $30/yr is also an advantage.

I filled up the included 2GB SD card with super detailed topos of the states of NV and UT.. Off now to get a 32GB card so I can upload the whole west coast. I want to go see that array!!

Sounds nice, Will. Now you have no excuse for ever getting lost.
