I just replaced my CDR today. What's all this talk about rubber tubing on these? There's a metal pipe that goes from the bottom of the CDR and into the top of the motor in the valley. The metal pipe has a plastic snap ring of some sort and a rubber grommet that holds it onto the CDR. Then there's a rubber grommet that presses against the intake deal there on the back where the CDR bolts. No rubber tubing found.

My original "connector" from the valley to the can was a grommet in the pan, a plastic tube 1" long that inserted into the grommet and into a rubber hose, then the rubber hose end had a metal band clamp to the CDR. Where the CDR bolted to the intake there was a thick rubber washer to seal on the intake. Mind you all this originally was covered in grey paint.

Yep, grey painted steel tubing. It has a nice ring to it. I threw it in the parts washer to clean it all up.

It's all back together now. It's definitely factory or an upgrade part. It necks down a little and is bent/rounded towards the inside of it on the end that goes into the engine. Then on the end that attaches to the CDR, it is splayed out. It looks manufactured.

How is the metal tube connected to the CDR then?

You know the nipple on the bottom of the CDR? There's a white plastic snap ring / spacer on it closest to the body of the CDR and then there's a rubber grommet. So you push the wider part of the metal tube over the rubber grommet and plastic snap ring. It clicks right on nice and snug.

Don't recall ever seeing it like that, but as long as it works what the heck!

I knew I should've taken more pictures. At first I thought it was a piece from an old vacuum cleaner. It's definitely got the old Ford grey paint on it though and it looks old.

I just replaced ours last week, wondering also if had anything to do with a runaway incident we had on the freeway as well as oil consumption.

I was cleaning the old one and frankly it just isn't worth messing with on a new old truck, I should have trusted my gut and got a new one to start fresh

Anyway I ordered a new cdr which is shaped a bit different than the original, and it has a new design over the one you are describing, and that we also have.

I like the new design better. Seals better and one less part. The cdr itself you just put a round rubber washer where it mates to the air intake housing.

Then the bottom of the cdr is barbed and you slide on a rubber tube taking the place of the metal one. It has a bunch of ridges on the bottom which gets pushed right into the engine casting.

If replacing with new you need to be carefull and fish that old piece out without dropping chunks into the engine. Mine was all crusty and hard and I had to pull it apart piece by piece.

I still have the old parts in the garage, if somebody wants pictures before I throw it all away I will, just ask

I could take pictures of the new one as well if you want for those that haven't dealt with it?

Reguardless of some things I have read, I was able to order the oem ford parts online just a few weeks ago so I think they make all the pieces.

Also looking at the old one I am not even sure if you could get a new cdr to mate with the old parts and vice versa, atleast nice and snug.

I installed a brand new CDR and used that metal tube, grommets and sleeve/snap-ring as stated above. Installation was effortless. None of the parts were rotted or falling apart.
