Dipstick behind alternator?

I can't believe I just found this. What's it go to?

My oil dipstick is on the driver's side, the A/T is pass. side behind the block. This little puppy is RIGHT behind the alt in front of the cylinder head.

What the heck is it?

Its for car applications. It is normally sealed with a small plug. I have a dipstick in mine, a universal, to plug it. It does not pick up oil though.

aaah.

I was wondering about that as well. Mine is plugged. I figured it wasn't done by accident but it was more than a little bit of a question.

Yeah it was originally a car engine then. Don't worry about that front one since you have the truck oilpan on it use that dipstick.

If the engine was originally installed in a 4x4 truck, it would have a rear sump oil pan and an oil pan mounted dipstick.

If it was installed in a different application it would have a front sump oil pan and a dipstick that entered a hole in the timing cover. In a 4x4 application that hole would have been plugged.

A timing cover dipstick won't provide accurate oil level information for a rear pump oil pan.
