Always far above the universal averages.
You're correct. Delo is on the left, Valvoline on the right. Sorry

To explain the sheering thing, think of oil as a bunch of marbles. They add polymers to improve viscosity [think of pieces of string to keep the marbles from rolling away so easy]. When the oil is used in high stress areas of your engine those pieces of string get sheered into smaller pieces thus thinning the oil.

Hope that makes sense.

I run 5000 miles between oil changes.

My last oil was Schaeffers 7000, and my truck did not like it, ran louder, harder cold weather starts, etc. Just switched back to 9000 and it is a whole new vehicle

Shearing in a 7.3L all depends on the mods you have done to you engine. So my question would be:

What mods have you done?

If your are not running a dual HPOP or High ICP programs then shearing is probably not a concern in your situation.

I would say 4-5,000 mile oil change intervals. I wouldn't recommend going over 5K without doing a used oil analysis report (some labs - Polaris $15, Schaeffer's $11, OAI $22, Blackstone $22).

Mobil Delvac 5W-40 has a good score on the Cold Cranking Viscosity test of 3200 at -25 deg Celcius. So if you live in a cold climate you will see good cold start characteristics.

They've all tended to resist sheering more.

5000 miles on a 15w-40 oil turns to the consistency of water. Synthetics will go about 8000 miles before reaching that point. However, I don't like running that many miles on those oils. I like to change them before they get to that point.
Sorry Curtis, I should have been more clear in my post. I was refering to 15W-40 synthetic Blends and not a 15W-40 dino. I have a few UOA reports on 7.3L running stealth & BTS pumps, and also on some 6.0L's. I'de be happy to share them for comparison. I don't like comparing apples to oranges (i.e. dual HPOP 7.3L's and 6.0L's) but as you know they both shear viscosity.

Probably need to start a new thread......

Ken,

Happen to have a Used Oil Analysis report for comparison? Would like to see how the Schaeffer's 9000 is performing with your setup then the difference when you add your big oil mod.

To know for sure you need to have a couple oil analysis done. But if you're still talking about that 5W-30 you have in there, you really should dump it and get some of the other oils talked about in here. I go somewhere between 6000-7000 miles when I'm using synthetic.

I am hoping to get 7-8K out of my oil chance which is about once a year for me.
