I'm having to top off the with coolant every other day. Changed thermostat about a week ago. Engine got hot and loss engine power a couple times, but I just shut it off then restart and it cool again. Had some white smoke at start up and thought it was HG but took it to the shop and mechanic said it was heater control valve. Need advise? Would valve make it overheat?
The mechanic said he pressured tested the system, but again I was not there to see it. He said it was the valve because the coolant was not circulating but I've felt the hoses going into the heater core and they felt hot and I assume the coolant is circulating. Should the vacuum line going to the valve have suction? Thanks for your help.
that valve is normally shut during the summer when it is hot outside,so that doesn't make sense. does your heater work? then your valve is open, the valve is designed to shut off coolant from heater core when in the max ac. with out looking it up I belive you would only have vac when trying to shut the valve. if you want to check the valve just hook it up and go through the range of temp with ac it should move
it works intermittenly, mostly when excellerating then the temp needle will go all the way to H and I get a message saying" engine power reduced" or something like that. I've noticed when I get this message and it goes to H, that the res tank will puke, though not all the time I dont think.
your pump might not be flowing enough, if you don't have any leaks, and your heater only gets hot at high rpm that is the most likely cause and you keep losing coolant through the degas bottle,
however if you have a leak then your heater core is getting airlocked not allowing it to heat up until at hig rpm it pushes coolant threw
before you replace the pump make sure you pressure test it, if the shop you had it at thought it was the valve causing it to over heat I don't know I would trust them to tell me where the leak is or isn't
At first it was on backwards, then I went to check it and corrected it. Could I have damaged it that way?
That's a good question, I never thought about it. I suppose it could've been slightly bent or warped. For the cost of it, I'd replace it just to be sure. Anything else you do will cost a lot more than a t-stat, so you'll want to make sure it's good or you'll be kicking yourself later.
