I've been looking at used pool tables on craigslist. They're not too hard to find at a decent price if you're able to pick them up and move them yourself.
Anyone have any idea what the slate tops weigh for a 4x8 table with 1" slate? From what I read the whole entire table weighs well over a thousand pounds, but the slate comes off in 3 slabs.
Could two guys carry these slabs up a flight of stairs and is there some kind of special equipment or method to do this?
Ha, have fun with that-there's a reason old pool tables are so often cheap or even free, or people just leave them in houses when they moved out.
I just looked up your info because I was curious myself- according to the standards for slate tables, the slate in a 4x8 table weighs 693 lbs- in three pieces, that's 231 lbs for each piece.
So, I guess the two of you could carry the individual slabs up some stairs, as long as you're alright with carrying 115 lbs each. Not something I'd be too crazy about doing.
edit: Damn, furyus beat me by 2 minutes! Hm, bit of a disparity between his page and mine. Thickness isn't specified on the one I posted but it does list total table weight at 1051 lbs.
can i ask why you want a slate table? i understand that there straighter then the wood ones, but unless you some sort of pool shark that makes a career out of it, a good wood table is perfect. im a avid player and i finally got a new one for christmas and its a wood one. its perfectly straight and easy to move. i dont notice any differences in wood vs slate when i play.

Back in the day I used used to help my Dad move and refurb all kinds of pool tables. With the type you are talking about each slab weighs approx. 200 lbs.
Each slab is typically attached to a wood frame but, the edges of the slabs are sharp so it is important to wear good fitting gloves. These slabs are easier to handle in the vertical position as opposed to horizontal.
When setting upyou table, each slab has to shimmed so that they are level to each other. After leveling the slabs the seams must be grouted or you will have a problem with the gaps even after the slabs are covered.
Covering the slabs has it's own issues. As do the rails. Not only do the rubber portion of the rails affect the "bounce" but, the tightness of the covers do as well. Table cover tightness also affects the speed of the *****.
I highly recommend that you have a professional set up your table....not a bad idea to have them move it as well. One busted slab makes for a worthless pool table.
As for moving the slabs a lot of hardware stores sell a gadget for moving around sheets of plywood and sheet rock. it is basicly a "S" thet you hook one end under what your moving and gives you a nice handle on the other end I found these to be perfect for moving pool table slabs, granite counter tops, stone slabs and such.
Believe it or not, we just went through what you are planning! I hired a pool table repair firm to move it, grout the slate, and re-felt the entire table. They did a great job, and the total cost for moving it and all the work was $650. Looks and feels like new, and should last a long time. BTW, that price also included 4 new cues, chaulk, and a pool cue rack. DO NOT attempt to re-felt the table yourself as it is a job for professionals only to do it right.
we moved ours in and put it together then got a pool guy to come in and level it. you souldnt have any problems moving the 3 piece slate, or the table with 2 people. we took as much of it apart as we could so it would be easyer to handle

Did you also plaster or wax the slate and re-felt the table yourself?
I'd move it myself and hire out the final assembly to those who know what they're doing. You might run a craigslist add or hang around behind a place that sells pool tables and find some of the kids that do the moving coming and going. Catch one of them and let them do it on the side.
When I got my pool table, I got the impression the kids that did the moving and assembling were subcontractors. If that's the case, I see no reason to pay for the mark up. I'm pretty handy myself so I helped them. Held the front door open for them, then took away some of their trash. It seemed to go well
