97 4.2 Input Shaft Question
Have a 97 4.2 5-Spd Manual with 300,000+ miles on it. Had engine rebuilt and was looking at the engine-side end of the input shaft which shows signs of wear. No surprise there.
Is it possible to replace that and the input shaft bearing without tearing the tranny apart? Probably not going to be driving the truck as much as I used to, but figured if I could replace them without tearing the tranny apart, why not since it is right there.
Thanks...

Thanks Brian. Yeah, it did very well. If not for an untimely solenoid going bad and me having to leave town, it would probably still be going. Apparently had a very minor leak in lower intake manifold and letting it set for two weeks before repairing the solenoid allowed sufficient coolant to leak into #1 to break the rod. Never had any of the white smoke, etc, etc. Oh well.
Clutch replaced 3 years ago -- hydraulics went out (there was still material on the clutch disk ) and still on original tranny.
