Can anyone tell me how big of a job it is to replace the sides on a 73-79 box? I have heard that it is quite tedious and takes a long time but I am not sure. I would like to do the replacing myself to prevent getting charged an arm and a leg at a body shop. If there is a diagram of how this is done I would like to see it too. Thanks
I don't know if there is any step-by-step guide, but I think an assembly manual will show the "break-down" of the box detail. Essentially you have to de-spot all of the welds along each seam. A local body shop put an entire box sideon my brothers 84 which was side-swiped. I tell you it was a wonderful thing. I know I wouldn't have the patience. This is why some people work in a body shop and others do other things.
Thanks Stock Man, do you know if there are any sites on the net that have the assembly manuals or if there is a place where I can buy them? I would appreciate it greatly.
I sat at a body shop once and watched a guy I know put a box side on a 96 F-250. It is about the same principal, just a different model. He drilled the spotwelds at the seam of the boxside on the inside of the bed and on the front side and by the tailgate. I think he did a little bit of work with an air chisel but not too much. Then the boxside pretty much came off. I had him look at my 78 and he said it would be somewhat the same. It is just by the taillights that would be a little different. I also had a friend do this to his 87 Ranger in about 2 hours. Welding it on is kind of tricky. The only way I have seen them put on is by drilling holes in the new skin where the other ones are on the bed, putting the skin in place, and filling the holes in with weld. The rest is just grinding filling and all of that fun stuff. If you have done body work it should not be a task. By the way, is your truck a long box or a short box and do you have a new skin or not because I have been trying to find a new shortbox bedside for my 78.
There are all sorts of restoration goodies listed on this sites home page. I believe assembly manuals are available for some model years. Good luck on your project.
