'96 F350 4X4 E04D Auto Transmission is having problems all a sudden. First off I noticed it was hard putting in gear even after stepping on the brake, almost like I have to force it. Then I got it in gear and as soon as I put it in D or R, it stalls. So I left it alone and came back after an hour and then I was able to get it in gear but seems 1st and 4th gear are gone... only 2nd and 3rd are working plus reverse.
If I put it in D it does not take off very fast... so I am thinking it might be in 3rd at that point. I detect no different in 1st or 2nd when I manual shift it. Plus it is not going in 4th (OD) now at highway speeds. Also I noticing when I'm putting it in Reverse it seems to be harsh and slams in gear.
Could this be the shift solenoid causing this? Appreciate any feedback...

This sounds like a linkage problem, not a transmission problem.
The E4od is entirely electronically controlled. The linkage position is sensed by a switch then that puts the tranny in different gears. MLPS is the switch, but I don't think that is your problem. Need to fix the linkage issue first. Other symptoms may disapear.
Good Luck Frank
