Axle exchange
I was wondering if anyone knew if an axle swap is possible between an 81 f150 4x4 and a 77 F150 4x4. The reason is that the 81 F150 has 3.08 gears and I have 3.55 gears. I need to get better mileage and more speed with lower RPM when I race my friends. Im not worried about 1/4 mile times either. My pikcup isnt used for pulling just getting more traction once and awile in snow and mud. I just was wondering if the setups were both Ford 9 inch and Dana 44 axles. If anyone knows please tell me.

The 73-79 F150 4wd trucks used a coil sprung Dana 44 solid front axle. The 80 -up 4wd use a Twin Traction Beam (TTB) independant front set up, AFAIK. Yes an axle swap is possible, but what you would probably want is a ring and pinion swap. Ring and pinion sets are relatively inexpensive but installation is tricky. Check around at the local shops to what this costs.

I already thought about the ring and pinion swap but there is no place to get 3.27 or 3.08 gears for a Dana 44 front axle. I have looked all over and there is nothing. If anyone knows where i can get these please let me know.

Fordman, I was looking at your message dated 12-17-99. You were talking about your mileage. Mine is the same way, however, the folks at the web address above have a chart that can help compare tire sizes to gear ratios and you may be able to solve a couple of problems. I hope this helps you and me.
