Loud drivetrain noise
I have a f350, 351 5 speed. It runs and shifts great. 61,000 one owner miles. When I let off of the gas at higher speeds (55 mph +) there is loud vibration grinding noise. A mechanic told me that it may be backlash in the gears. When I give it gas, it goes away. No noise at all. I cannot feel any vibration coming through the shifter. The noise is very loud. There is not any throwout bearing noise. The transmission shifts smooth.
Any ideas as to what it could be?

If you think is coming from the rear of the truck , have a look under there , check the u joints . The best way to track the noise is if you have acsess to a lift , you can run it up to speed & find out where its coming from , you can do it with out a lift with a jack & jack stands , but a lift is better...Lew
