Books??

You guys have been two for two so far, I thought I would try you again. Thanks for your help so far! I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good book for helping me rebuild/restore my 79 F150 4WD Supercab. I need something with diagrams of how it should look, and Torque Specifications.... Also I have a 351M, I see stuff on the 400/351M, are these that simular that the books are interchangable?? I would not think so, but I thought I would ask you guys as you seem to have the answers... Thanks again for the space.

AFAIK the only difference between the 351M and the 400 are the crankshaft and pistons, and the 351M has a lifter valley heat shield that is not on the 400 ( not on my 351M either now that I've changed the intake ). Look in the technical articles section of this web site for something like "Performance Options for the 351M" for a good write up.

I have the '79 Ford Truck Ship Engine Manual checked out of the library. I don't know where you live, but if your library is any good, you should be able to check this out from anywhere in the country by special request. Let me know if you want it and I will 1) return it to the library, 2) give you the library name and location, and 3) the call number. It shows two 351 engines, one sistered (I just made this term up) with the 302 block and the other (apparently yours) sistered with the 400 block--I believe the 351 sistered with the 400 is the renowned 351 Cleveland that hot rodders love. Anyway, according to the shop manual the 351/400 has a 3.5 inch conecting rod vs the 302/351's 3 inch rod. The long rod is a great way to increase dwell time at top dead center for better combustion and I believe allows for higher compression without knock, and results in less lateral thrust, that is more torque into the crank. If that is your engine, consider yourself blessed!

In addition to the Shop Manuals I would recommend this book:

How to Rebuild Ford V8 Engines: 351C-351M-400-429-460. Tom Monroe, Published by HP Books.

I found it at the local B. Daltons and have found it very helpful.
