New Alt
Ok, so I hear the bearing(s) in my OEM Alt starting to make some funny noises, so figure that 21 years was as much as I could ask (1989 3.0 Shorty)
I got a newer style aftermarket one - it's a 100amp, and single wire. (can someone help with the term BIG 3?)
The original wire connector has 3 connections (is this the big 3?) - I assume that one is the charge wire, one is the sense wire (to switch on and off the Alt from a Voltage Regulator, or is that built in?) - and the third wire goes to the voltmeter inside the dash?...
The new one only calls/needs ONE wire to work, and they recommend a new 10awg strained wire from the Battery or Starter Relay (batt side) directly to the Alt... should I go bigger? - like 8 or 6?
Here are my Questions:
Should I just run that new Wire directly to the battery? or the pole that is on the starter relay there? - seems easy to do at that pole if I use a Stakon type connector, etc. (type that crimps to end of wire, and has a loop flat) They say I can do it either way, but just curious if it mattered.
How can I continue to use the voltmeter on the dash? I really like it, since it's not just an "idiot" light... it kinda gives me an idea of battery charge, etc...
The new alt has a 2 conductor plug that is covered, and the papers say that you can connect one of the wires for the voltmeter to the first pin, but I'm asking all of you if this is truely all I need to do to get the dash meter to work?
I know the stock alt is 60 amp - I didn't want to go too crazy money wise, but wanted something a little bit beefier than stock... 100amps will be fine.
The unit is made by powermaster, and is their 100amp unit, if that helps anyone to help me with this :-)
Last question - will I notice more power going to this 100amp from the 60? - what I'm really hoping for is that it will bring the battery back faster, esp in cooler weather... if I don't take it on the hwy at least once a week, the battery will eventually die - so I'm hoping that around town driving for 10 mins a day will help this with a beefier alt... maybe a bit more at idle? or below 30mph?
Thanks all! - Happy New Year!
Check out the sticky notes at the top of the forum. There is one for converting alternators in older Aerostars. That may answer your questions or at least get you started on the right path. I've not had to convert, so my experience/help to you is somewhat limited.
Thanks
change to a 3G, it's easy
just pick the mounting configuration holes on the A. that your rig needs.
