i just bought this 98 f150 4.6L and its a really clean truck. drives like new and NO rust anywhere on body.
my problem is the fuel milage.
first off what should i be getting with this truck?
second i filled the truck with fuel yesterday and drove to my buddys house which was 47 miles from the fuel station(i reset the trip so i could check fuel economy). when i arived at his house i was at 3/4 of a tank of fuel. first thing i thought of was fuel leak. we both looked over the truck and seen no leaks anywhere. i didnt even smell fuel anywhere.
is there anything else i should look for. i dont know to much about these ford gas engines. like i said i didnt smell or see any leaks. in my opinion this thing should do better than 50 mile to a 1/4 tank of fuel or is it just nature if the beast. do they really get this bad of fuel milage?
well depending on conditions and how heavy my foot is, i can kill a quarter tank if 50 miles. however, under good conditions and what not 50 miles will barely move the needle. highway you should get around 17 or so and city id expect 13-15. and you should be able to squeaze maybe 18 or so highway if you try. check the air filter, and oil. it should be running 5x20 or 30 oil with preferably a motorcraft filter. check the tires. they should be around 32 psi your door jamb should have the exact pressures. also what kind of shape are the tires in? if they need replaced, that can hurt mileage. how many miles are on the truck? it may need new plugs. the amount of fuel that you burned in 50 miles sounds like about 11 or 12 mpgs right now.
Like what farmer said it all depends on how heavy your foot gets. Most of the time I get to about 50 miles though and my needle is barely off of the F, that's with an 02' Supercrew with the 5.4 which would get worse gas mileage. I can barely scratch the teens in mpg's nowadays, I blame the weather.
