transfer case adapter

I just bought a C-6 tranny with a cast iron t-case adapter on it 5.75 inch long with a circular 6 bolt pattern & a 31 spline shaft. Can anyone tell me what model year trucks used that length of adapter and for what t-case?
help, I've got a bunch of parts from different model years & it is becoming a real Frankenstein.
(the tranny has 460 bellhousing pattern)

The trans and adapter you described is from a 73-79 Ford F series that had a 351/400 M engine and most likely an NP 203 transfer case.A 205 was occasionly bolted to this combo but VERY rarely.

I've got a '77 F150 w 351M C6 NP205 so thats certainly a possibility. From what I've read the Ford trucks of this vintage all uses a circular bolt pattern on the t-case adaptor and all had 31 spline input shafts. If you have the option, and don't want/need full time 4wd I'd go with the NP205.

After rereading your post here and the other one I've got a question. Is what makes this combo ( C6 and NP205 ) rare the transmission/t-case adaptor? The adaptor for my C6 is alumnium ( unless I was drinking too much Sam Adams when I looked ) You mentioned in another post that there were at least 6 different adaptors. Also my combo is stock height with single U-joints at both ends of the front driveshaft. Were double cardan joints stock on some models or were these required because of the amount of lift? Just curious basically.

The C6 205 combo is very common just not with the short adapter. The reason for this is that the 203 has a seperate gearbox for lowrange that is bolted in between the adapter and the transfercase. The 205 doesnt have this so it uses a longer adapter and output shaft. The spline count and the bolt pattern are the same so it will bolt together. The cv joint was a factory pieceand came on most 4x4s. There are exceptions so nothing is cast in stone as to how things were built. Starting in 1980 ford started using the aluminum adapter behind the C6. There were some long adapters to fit the 205 for use in the F350 but most were short to fit the NP 208 . This was an aluminum case part time transfer case that has a planetary reduction in the front part similar to the 203 These were also a bit wider so they had a cv joint on the front shaft, most of the time. Hope this answers your questions ,if not post again and ill check back later Thanx
