if i change my single pipe setup to a duel pipe setup, will this enhance or hurt performance------5.8 liter 4v-have heard comments both ways-need to ask you guys who have been around it. thanks jim
It will be better. It will tend to rev more freely is my seat of the pants observation. But will it pass smog? It will not if you have to get it looked at. Mine didn't, but what surprised me is the guy said "put a cat in each side or go back to single with one cat".
Technically duals with a catalytic convertor in both sides is not legal either, but that's what I did and he was happy.
The vehicle is certified by how it is equipped from the factory. So nothing can be changed from the cat forward legally. That's why cat-back systems are so popular, they are legal to install.
So even though car "A" or vehicle "B" has duals and or dual cats, if your truck didn't have it from the factory(no 80-86 did), then you cannot legally change it. The only people that possibly can legally get away with having duals are certain years of the trucks with 460's and most of the old diesels that didn't have cats from the factory.

Exactly, I didn't explain very well, or not at all.
My '85/460 is non-catalyst, so I don't need one. But, I'm still technically not supposed to make changes. However, I just passed my emissions test for the last time (25 years old) so I'm free to make whatever changes I want and no-one will ever know.

The laws here vary state-by-state, and further county by county.
here in tx once 25 years old they don't check emissions so one can pretty much do as one would want. see a lot of pickups here that have non stock duel exhausts on them and they have to be getting them inspected.

People do it all the time, just like I did. But you run the risk of wasting a lot of money on an exhaust if the guy at the station won't pass it. Just something to be aware of. I went out on a limb, and it cost me $120.00 in new catalytic convertors. I was prepared to have to replace the whole thing though.
i gotta 1985 ford f150 302, took both cats off and got a flowmaster on it, sounds great....aint got caught yet tho cuz im pretty sure u aint allowed to have that in indiana, but i like it lol
