Adjusting Toe Alignment

Hello.
I have a 1977 F150 4x4 Custom. It has the type of steering which only has one tie rod adjustment sleeve and is on the driver's side.
My question is about the thread direction on the inner and outer tie rod and adjustment sleeve.
Wouldnt there have to be a reverse thread in there somewhere in order for the adjustment sleeve to lenghten or shorten and thus change the toe?
It would seem that there would have to be, or otherwise, turning the adjustment sleeve would pull one wheel in and push the other out.
Is this thinking correct? and if so, where is the reverse thread located?

One end of the adjustment sleeve is left hand thread and the other is right hand thread. Looking from the front, if you turn the sleeve toward you and downward you make the tie rod shorter.

Thank you for that information.
Mine is so seized up from the years that i cant get it to turn.
Ive sprayed nearly a can of pb blaster on it and have broke a medium sized pipe wrench! Im not going to try to turn the adjuster anymore. I think i'll just remove the whole tie rod assembly at the inner and outer joints and go from there. I can probably cut that adjuster sleeve off if i have to and just replace that

Just throwing this out there, but you did loosen the retaining bolts right?

Yes I did. Today i tried heating it with a torch. Still wont budge. I guess i'll just take the whole tie rod off and either work on it in a vise or buy all new components

Yeah I have an 78 E150 van and I believe the suspension is identical to yours. It cost me $100 to replace all the tie rod ends (including the large one that connects to the steering pitman arm. So. Its cheaper and easier to replace them.

here goes my first post since i bought my 75 f100 4x4
it will come right off without a torch if you take a chisel (air chisel works best) and put it in the split of the adjusting sleeve. give it a few whacks with the hammer (or squeeze the trigger) and this will bust it loose. be a good idea to replace it after-wards, but depending on how bad you deform it, you may not have to.
little trick i learned from watching the mechanics i work with.
