I need to know if the frames are the same for a '72 model and the '73-'79 model trucks. I found one to start a rebuild project if it will work. Thanks.
David I can tell you that there is a difference between a 66 and a 76. I am not sure about 66 to 72. The 73 chassis becomes wider behind the cab, and there are elevation differences on the mounts, wheel base is longer.

From personal experience, the frames are similar.
With a little ingenuity you can probably make it fit.
I have had 55,61,74,75,77,78,79 and 92 1/2 ton Fords. The cab mounts were all similar as I recall, but I'm not sure about the positioning, that is front to back and left to right distances.
You should be able to get frame dimensions from your local body shop. They have manuals that give all the dimensions so they an check to see if a frame has been bent or tweaked and needs to go on a frame rack or not. (I used to work in a body shop)
If you have a longbox, the 67-72 frame has a 131" wb and the 73-79 frame has a 133" wb. If it's a shortbox there is also a 2" difference. I believe the cab should bolt up, however. Measure the mounting points to be sure.
Agreed the horizontal measurements are the same. It's the vertical that is different. You might do some engineering and make it work, but it will not bolt up and set level. When I last looked the 97 had simular confiruration as my 66, but can't say if the 2000 still does.
