First time posting here....Last year I bought a rusty F250 (77) camper special with 64k miles, 460. Owned by a farmer who used it mostly in his barn and fields. Runs perfect with no clunks, groans, knocks or clicks but the nr 3 spark plug fouls up constantly and it uses oil like crazy. This baby was sitting for years without being started and I was wondering if the motor sounds good but uses oil am I looking at a rebuild or maybe just valve stem seals? I already bebuilt the entire brake system and replaced the rubber mounts for the front clip, it sagged so bad the doors would hit the lower parts of the fenders when they were opened. Any help on this project would be appreciated Tks.
Have you ran a compression check on it? If not try and do so. Also put a vacuum gauge on it to check the vacuum. This can tell you something about the condition of the motor.
Haven't run a compression check yet.It runs so good I'm afraid of what I might find. I know it's gotta be done. What's the telltale signs between a sloppy piston and a leaky seal? If I put oil in the cylinder it will tell me if the rings are bad but will anything disclose the seals.
Oil in the cylinder will help to eliminate the rings. One of the tell-tale signs of a leaking valve stem seal is a puff of blue smoke out the exhaust at startup. If the seal is leaking bad enough, it will smoke some all the time, but there will be a very noticeable cloud of blue smoke when you start it, after it has sat for a while.
Sounds to me like you struck gold. there is smoke. I think maybe this is a good weekend project coming up soon. I'll do the compression check first and if all cylinders are close to even, I'll slip the seals in. and go from there. Sure beats a teardown. Can't help to think that after the truck sat for a few years in the barn that the seals didn't dry and crack. Keep in mind this was an old guy I think used his tractor drain oil for the truck and never changed the filter. First thing I had to do was put in a new oil pump. There was transmission fluid in the brake system etc. not to mention the ears of corn I had to pull out from under the seats. This is a project vehicle. Tks....
