CEL and no power

CEL and no power
OK,my friend just bought a 2000 f-250 w/ 118,000 miles.Sometimes the CEL comes on and he said there is no power like a limp mode or something.Dont have a scanner and dont no much more about the truck except the it has and edge with attitude thats not working properly.What would cause the engine to have no power?

First off. .. I'd put it back to stock. Take the edge off and eliminate that right off the bad. What does it feel like? Any smoke? Roughness? When hot? cold? Any way of reading the code? My first thought would the one of the connectors under the valve covers that goes to the injectors and glowplugs. They tend to work themselves loose over time. But that would be associated with severe roughness(running on only four cylinders!)
Check back with as much details as you can. And if you can get the code read. . . do that too!
