I am interested in buying a '77 4x4 I saw this weekend. My question is the guy wants $975 for it. I cranked it(havent drove it yet will today) and it crankled and idled great. My questions is what are some things I should be looking for as far as what's probably going to break next? I mean this truck is as old as I am and I know I don't feel like getting up and running everyday. What are some problems with this truck? I beleive it has a 351 in it. Does anyone know if that would be a 351M or 351W? All the 4x4 parts work (according to the guy, I'll know better today). Thanks!!!
If you are referring to a F150, I own the same truck and bought it about 5 years ago, I am 22 now. The engine is most likely a 351M with the NP205 transfer case, dana 44 front axle and Ford 9" rear. The few things i can recommend to check the truck for mechanical soundness is an oil pressure gage, not the stock, but one with numbers for pressure. Also, pull the front hubs and look for rust in them and with the truck on a flat suface with the trans and transfer case in neutral, try to spin the driveshafts and feel for play in the ring and pinion, mine is about to go out on the 9". You didn't say if it was an automatic or standard. After that, a good test drive should show any weak links, and besides, working on these trucks is so simple, I don't mind the occasional blown u-joint or front bearing re-tightning. It's how i relax.
Rebs, if the body aint falling off and if it aint smoking and banging when you drive it don't worry about the fine print, a 4X4 for less than a thousand bucks is a buy.
