My truck is an 88 with a 5L 302 and a M5OD behind it and 170,000 miles on it, and it starts like a champ in the cold, no hesitation, but there have been a few times when I get home from work, realize I should move over in the driveway after I have turned the truck off, and when I got to start it again it is REAL sluggish. and takes a while to start. am I right in thinking that this could be a worn out coil?
I had a 69 Firebird 400 that would do that when I would stop for gas. I ended up replacing the battery with the most powerful battery that I could get that would fit.
That fixed the problem. You may also have battery cables that are going bad (too much
internal resistance when warm).
ya, turns over real slow and takes a while to start. not sure why I was thinking coil earlier, now that I think about it it sounds more like a starter issue, but why would it be all good when cold but sluggish/having trouble turning over when hot.
Hot conductors, including the cable to the starter and the windings inside the starter itself, have higher resistance than cold ones, so it takes more current in to get enough output. The starter could be the culprit, or the cable running down to it, as they are close enough to the engine to get warm while it's running.
My truck starts like a champ when it's dead cold, but doesn't start very well for hours after it's been run, even only for a few miles. It cranks over just fine, and it's got over a thousand cranking amps at its disposal, so I've been trying to pin that culprit down. It's proving elusive. That's the problem with conditional problems. If something simply doesn't work, period, it's a whole lot easier to find the source!
My truck does it too, but strange thing is if i wait just two min it fires right up. only happens every so often, truck never dies, just if i have been drivin for a while and shut it down. My thought is the module on dist. I always keep one in glove box and was thinkin of changin it to see just havent got around to doin it yet
