Fellas,
I am preparing to rip out my exhaust from the exhaust manifold back. I am going to re route and run tru dual. With mufflers specifically hi flows, do i need a special type for the size of engine and diesel or will a standard flowmaster or similar work? Got a welder from a friend and i found a place that has every kind of elbow and size of pipe i could ask for. Thinking of doing 3" straight out with the high flow muffs because i cant handle the straight pipe sound on this monster. It is out of control! hahaha
I have one with straight thru glass packs and while a little tamer than straights it is still pretty loud.
There are some that are for diesel (or used to be) and I am not sure of the reason, may have been a marketing ploy.
well yeah because i have seen the "diesel" muffs cross cut and it isnt much different from a normal high flow muff. Canadian tire has some Cherry Bomb Turbo Mufflers and they are rated the same flow as flowmasters. Just got me thinking because they are only 49 bucks each. Not sure if they would work but someone may know. I did think about the red straight packs but they can be very obnoxious. haha.
I would be more concerned with the inside diameter than wether it was designated for diesel or not. But some may be more prone to suet build up than others.
The ones i saw were 2.75" in and out and larger interior throughput so i wouldnt think it would be a large deal. I just heard the cherry bombs on a diesel and i am not interested. Will definitely go with flow master or similar. They are 89 each but it will be worth it. If it was turbo'd i would run straight dual stacks. Ahhh wishful thinkin!
I hear ya if you are going to go with 3" pipe will the flow rate be the same as using 2.75 if you use 2.75 mufflers or am I missing something here. Either way if you have single exhaust now you will be pleased with the outcome.
yeah i am actually going to fab cut off that nasty elbow there where the two pipes join so it will come straight off the manifold to the pipe on each side. That way if i ever turbo, i can easily run it straight to the stacks which i will make one day! Damn i love mini welders. If i would have known it was this easy i would have done it a long time ago.
My first mig was a 110 volt gas rig rated to 1/4 inch single pass. When I bought the 300 amp welder I now have I then sold my little one which I wish I would have kept as it did a better job on real light stuff. Oh well live and learn I will eventually replace it.
on gas engines when going dual, you gain hp but lose torque(at least on the bottom end.)they claimed by connecting the two duals with a crossover pipe(like in front of the trans) to connect the two pipes, this helps equalize them and helps not lose bottom end torque so much.
does this apply with diesels as well?
this is why i was thinking a single 3.5 pipe would be best for bottom end torque.(where personally i want the nuts of the engine.with hp #'s of little concern.)
wreckinball,
what made you decide on duals was the way to go?
that is what i was going off of. Not to say though that if i heard different i wouldnt change the idea, it is still in the plan stage for the most part!
