I have a 1982 F250 with a 302 auto. I was considering swapping out the coil and dura spark ignition for an MSD 6 ignition box and blaster coil. I already have the MSD distributor in the truck, and I am going to Ford Racing 9mm spark plug wires. How realiable is this ignition system and how easy is it to install?
Not as reliable as the stock Duraspark ignition system your truck already has.
If any part of your Duraspark ignition happens to fail, you can walk into ANY parts house in ANY town and get a replacement. Not so with MSD or any of those other aftermarket systems.
Unless you are racing your truck, MSD is not an improvement over what you have now, either, unless there is something wrong with your current system. MSD doesn't show its stuff until you get up past 5,000 rpms. How often will you really be revving that high?
Keep in mind that your truck is now 28 years old, so to replace any part of your stock ignition system would not be unheard of.
He is looking at a multiple spark type ignition though, and I have heard they do idle and have a smoother low end, because instead of one spark at the plug, at low rpms it hits the plug several times with a spark. And it is a capacitive discharge system, so it does have a higher voltage at the plugs.
