Which is the number 1 cylinder on my '54 239 Y-block? I think it is the first one on the driver's side but I am not sure and I can not find it any where in the shop manual. I thought it was in there but now I can not find it?
Take a look at the engine, one bank is farther forward than the other one. Typically the front cylinder on the bank farthest forward is cylinder #1 (except for cornbinders....I think they put #1 somewhere in the middle)
Is that the cylinder that you are having the compression problems in?
Yep, it's always the cylinder closest to the radiator (or grill if you don't have a radiator)
Don't ask me about rear engines tho, it's been way too long to remember. Haunt used book stores and flea markets for old Motors and Chilton manuals.
