I have a 351 windsor and need cam and distributor for it but don't know the year of the motor. Only found one number on block (1w141591). Does anyone have any suggestions on how to identify the year and where any other numbers might if there are any. Any comments or suggestion appreciated. Thanks
Look on the passenger side near the starter for a casting number and date code. For Example:
D2AE 6015BA (the casting number D2=72 A=fullsized car E=Engine part 6015=basic casting number for engine blocks BA=change level A,B,C,....Z,AA,BA ect.
2C18 (date code 2=(7)2 C=March (A-M used except I) 18= 18th March 18 1972)
Does it really matter what year 351W you have in regards to distributor and cam? Late model 5.8 (351W) may have roller tappet cams and this would make a difference however if you have a 60's,70's, early 80's you probably have a flat tappet cam. 302 and 351 cams are interchangable so long as you use the proper firing order. I learned this the hard way as I found I had a 351 cam (w/ 351 firing order) in my 302 and wired it as a 302. It barely ran untill I corrected the firing order. This really blew the mind of a buddy helping me who is a Ch**y guy. I do know that you can't interchange distributors between 302-351W. 351W have a taller deck height. My Summit catalogue lists the 351W distributor as being unique and not interchangible with anything else like 351M. The cams were listed 69-85.
