Engine Replacement/Transmission Options

I bought a truck recently that needs an engine. Its a '95 F250 with a 5.8 L 351. So I am going to be doing my first engine swap, and am looking forward to it. It came with a 5 speed, and I was planning on leaving it that way, but my wife wants me to put in an automatic so she can drive it since its our third vehicle and she won't learn to drive a stick.

I got a couple questions.

What transmission do you guys recommend?

I am planning on using an aftermarket floor shifter (Lokar) instead of doing a column change?

Suggestions on which torque converter I should purchase?

What else would I need to change?

How about compatibility with the transfer case since 4X4?

Drive shaft change?

Planning on doing some hauling, nothing more the 10K lbs, and I would like to get 40 miles per gallon. Just kidding would like to maximize fuel economy though.

Shift Kit and if so what do you recommend?

Thanks

The only transmission that fits the bill is the E4OD but that involves a wiring harness and computer swap, different driveshafts and possibly a transfercase as well, so I don't envy you for the choice you have to make... butcher your truck or teach the wife how to drive a stick. A C6 would be aeasier but it doesn't have overdrive so fuel milage would take a permanent hit into single digits. Regardless what you do there is no "getting fuel economy" in a truck this big and particularly when towing so consider yourself lucky if it manages double digits regularly, of all the choices you have the ZF will deliver the best milage.

Thanks for the advice. Think I will keep it a manual. I don't want her driving my truck anyway. She'll try to argue, but I never argue with her I just dicker.

Would also have to change the radiator or get an add on trans. cooler & run the lines to there. Flex plate instead of flywheel. Lot of work, convince her it's too much & the money would be better spent elsewhere. Maybe new clothes when you start dealing? Here honey, go buy a new dress instead . We'll just leave the stick in the truck.

I imagine she has common sense, so try to reason and explain all the benefits of a stick. If all else fails, tell her she gets the next new car?

Thanks for the Help

No way she gets to pick the next new car. It will be a very long while before we buy a new vehicle, but I am definitely not putting that on the table. I am keeping it a manual. I am the head of this household damn it, and there are just times when women aren't reasonable and a man just has to put his foot down and make the decision. More later, I gotta run. The buzzer went off on the dryer, and she gets pissed if I don't fold them right away cause they get wrinkly. I also have to clean all the bathrooms and vaccumn before she gets home from shopping.
