Steeringbox to column joint......

I have been bothered by my steering column telescoping in and out on my 69 F100 manual steering 2wd. I have found that while trying to manuever at slow speeds, that if I push in on the steering wheel, the steering gets easier. If it is out, I have scraping and groaning ect. I had a buddy look at the coupler (what's this part called?) between the bottom of the column and the steering gear while I was moving the shaft in and out. The canvas pad looking material was flexing quite a bit like it is worn out and had little rigidity left. Is this part going to be hard to find, and is there much more to the installation than bolting it together?

BBT,
I've seen those disks at most of the larger parts stores. Don't know if they're an exact fit for your truck, but they should be. Macs or Autokrafters should carry them also.

Steeringbox to column joint......

I've found the rag joint or flex joint at the local parts store, picked up two that they had so I have one on hand for the next time! The cost was about $5 a piece with new hardware even! This is something I didn't expect to find there. There are several different sizes, so make sure you get the correct size. When you change, you may have to loosen the bolts for the box to gain clearence to slip it in, be careful not to bend the two metal pieces that hold the rag in place. Found mine in the "Help" section with all the neat little hard to find parts. Sorry, no numbers to give right now, but I'll kick around and see if I can find the package it came in with the numbers/brand if nobody can locate these for you. Might try lookin' at one of the on-line parts places to "see" what you need and who makes 'em. Chuck P.

Your rag joint (properly called: steering coupler) may be a little bad,but you should not be able to move the column shaft in and out. Looking at the column from under the hood, about halfway up the shaft, there should be an area that contains another joint, but this joint is a mechanical joint that contains ' shoes' that secure the steering shaft from moving back and forth and are designed to break away when the vehicle is involved in a serious enough accident. Your problem has got to be in this area,or for a tilt column,up in the tilt mechanism. The rag joint is only to cushion the road shock that is placed on the gear box and make it more comfortable for the driver.Have this fixed soon.

Steeringbox to column joint......

If you have to replace, they sell them over here Bremerton, At the NAPA store. Also if its bad will have alot of slop in steering and if not done before some of them you have to grind off the rivet to remove. Myself I start by dropping the two bolt that hold the steering column in the cab the removing plate in engine compartment on firewall then rest is easy. hope this helps
