85 stalling prob

have a1985 f150 4wd, 5.8 liter with auto trans-explorer pkg. Truck starts fine and idles- when put in gear it stalls- either drive or reverse. starts right back up and immediately stalls when put in gear. tried for twenty min to get it moveable and i finally was able to start to drive it. drove it 5 miles and had to stop for a stop sign and prob started all over. finally was able to get it moving and limped it home. Has new pvc valve and carb was rebuilt two years ago- choke appears to open and close normally. ideas anyone- this is frustrating. thanks, jim hEAT PIPE FROM MANIFOLD HOOKED UP-TRUCK IS PRETTY MUCH ORIGINAL

If it keeps stalling, it must not be running very smooth correct? I would check all the vacuum hoses for leaks or cracking. I would check the timing, the idle speed, and since the carb was rebuilt, I would adjust the idle mixture screws and try to get the engine running it's best. Sparkplug wires look good, sparkplugs look good? If it's running rough, it's probably barely keeping itself running, and when you put the load of the tranny on it, it says "forget it" and stops.

P.S. Also you can pull the carb off, and make sure the egr system hasn't burnt the gasket out underneath. If the gasket is burnt out, or the egr is leaking, that can also cause it to run rough and stall.
