4x4 steering slop
I have a 78 F250 4x4 that has excessive steering slop. (about 90 degrees of steering wheel slop) I know the slop is coming from my steering box. Napa sells a reseal/rebuild kit for $15. or a reman box for $275. Has anyone ever had one of these apart. My haynes manual says that it is a Ford integral worm and sector type power steering box.
Any help would be great. Thanks
one of the problems that cropped up was a lot of steering play and also the truck wouldn't go straight but didn't pull to one side or the other reliably. I had originally attributed it to the fact that the truck is old and there was play in the bushings and tie rods.
until we discovered a crack in the frame under the steering box. When one turned the wheel the entire front part of the frame would twist, steering box included.
That was easily welded and is near perfect now... however while welding it my dad caught the frame on fire, which didn't do any damage besides cracking the seals on the steering box... we decided to get a rebuild kit or a rebuilt one and when they didn't have the kit we bought the rebuild. When we took the old one apart all the ***** from the bearings in it just fell out.
apparently the old owner had messed with it before and broke the bearings, and just stuffed the ***** back in it when he put it back together... I was quite amazed.
not that this helps but it was pretty amusing
