Question FALLING COOLANT LEVEL

I am looking for an explanation as to why my coolant level is very slowly falling and the cooling system passed a pressure test! So what's up? I mean I topped it off last time about 5,000 mi ago because it was low. I filled it to the max line and now it is a little below min line on resovoir. The last time anything was touched on the cooling system was when the upper radiator hose had to be disconnected to replace engine belt,10,000 mi ago. There was a little coolant lost but I replenished it right after I got it back from the dealership. There was a new water pump & thermostat installed about 20,000 mi ago. What explanation can there be? Truck due back in shop in about a week. 2001 SD 7.3 Lariat

Thanks for the help I am sure to get.

If the pressure test turned out OK then you have nothing to worry about.
Probably, you had some air pocket somewhere in the cooling system.

On our later model 6oh's they decided the min line was the proper fill point

So maybe your truck was ahead of the times

Does it go any lower after it reaches that point ?

is it possible it is a simple as a small crack in your bottle that once warm allows the leakage to a point ?

or a hose that under pressure does the same ?

Look at the simple thing first to eliminate them - good luck !

DONE! I replaced the radiator cap with a brand new one as soon as the Ford diesel tech said it passed the pressure test & everything was as it should be(). That was 5,000mi ago.

Thanks redford

I have never let it go below this point because I check the coolant level and top it off if needed every 5,000mi. This 5,000mi service I will be topping it off with Ford diesel coolant additive(1 qt), because I believe it is due for a refill. I will also check for cracks and pin holes in the cooling system, with system warm & running. I may have a Ford diesel tech do an inspection first.

Thanks jdadamsjr

I decided to just leave the coolant level alone and just see how low it will go and keep my eyes open for leaks and any overheating.

Could possibly from all the cold weather, as temp drops things start to reduce in size. I was just under my truck checking the tie rods, ball joints and noticed that there was water weeping from the lower radiator hose. The water level is a bit low but no leak shows up on the pavement.

I noticed this problem before the cold weather began.

I am glad to help if I can. Take a look at the water pump metal extension pipe that bolts to the water pump(look under the truck on the drivers side) that goes to the lower radiator hose. There is an o-ring that goes between the water pump and the extension, maybe that could be a source of the problem. I had to change mine last year, it would weep when engine was cool when engine was at operating temp no leak was noticeable. Get the o-ring from Ford, it wasn't a typical round edge but rather a square cut o-ring. I also changed my hose clamps over to the screw type rather than reuse the factory spring type(use pliers to release).I hope this helps, Todd
