yesterday i started my 64 4WD warmed it up and drove it up to the front of my shop to service it and get it ready for the rest of the winter. Snow is getting to deep for that little piece of crap S-10. anyway it was sitting in front of the garage and i reached over the module to check the brake fluid and it died cold dead. no sputter nutin.this already put me in a bad mood as i had to work on it outside 0 degrees and snowing. happy new year. history, stock 64 f-100 4X4. 300 -6 from a 66 econoline. converted to electronic ignition from a 78. the module and coil are mounted on the fender well. been running fine for two years now. anyway, first suspision was the module as they die on me regularly. bought a new one. no go, replaced the coil, no go. had the wife come out and turn it over so i could check fro fire. i did find out that it had fire everywhere when it is not trying to be started but nothing when cranking. i have ran into this problem before but cannot remember what it was. it even tried to start one time when engine was still kinda turning over after stopping to try and start it, could this be in the ignition switch or is there another fuse somewhere that i dont know about that supplies juice when trying to start it. Dutch
Not sure what your problem is specifically this time, though from the three 76-79's we ran in the late 80's, I HATE THOSE BOXES! Seriously, if there's a way to get rid of that thing, do it. Pertronix? Anything. We had one go, bought a new one and the new one was bad too! Drove us nuts trying to figure it out & when we gave up & bought a 3rd one it worked! I don't doubt the guy at the parts store put the bad one back on teh shelf just to drive the next guy crazy too!
stock 64 f-100 4X4. 300 -6 from a 66 econoline. converted to DuraSpark electronic ignition from a 78. The module and coil are mounted on the fender well. been running fine for two years now.
Anyway, first suspicion was the module as they die on me regularly. Bought a new one, no go, replaced the coil, no go.
You forgot something. Inside the dizzy is this:
D4PZ12A112A .. Stator aka magnetic pick-up coil (Motorcraft DU1A) / Available from Ford.
This little charmer replaces the points/condenser when DuraSpark is present.
When this puppy begins to fail, the symptoms can be the same as the module.
The stator fits all: 1974/79 Trucks, Bronco's, Econolines & Passenger Cars except 1979 LTD's with EEC.
Your truck is not stock, since the engine has been swapped, as well as the ignition system.
yamaweezel, did not check that, got cold and pissed it off for the day, LOL will check when i get home. Hey thanks ND that'll prolly be my next attack. didn't think about that piece as the dist. is new. haha ( rebuilt) with only about a 1000 miles on it. thanks guys at least i have an attack avenue when i get off work. supposed to hit in the 20 below range in the next coupla days so will definately work on it today. it's only zero, at this point no wind. Check the coil also.....Back probe the power to the module. it has 2 power sources, one from the start side of the switch on cranking then switches over to the ign side while running. Also check the wiring at the firewall they have a bad habit of corroding and falling apart cutting the power to the module while everything looks good.
I keep a TFI module, reculator and coil under the seat at all times in the 64. and for the 69 it has a pertronics and i keep a set of new points in the glove box just in case.
thanks Garbs, will do that, weather turned to full blizzard , snowing , wind at about 30 mph. 5 below right now, supposed to hit 20 to 30 below today and tonight so i'm just gonna look at it as i walk past it into the house. haha decided that i dont need it quite that badly, have also changed my mind and am going to install pertronics into it. my big question ??? should i try and do the insert thing to the existing dist. or the complete dist.?? have never tried replacing the guts ( if it can even be done) so i have no knowledge in this area. any suggestions from someone that has done the isside of the dist. would be very helpful. Thanks Dutch
Done several of them, but none on a Ford six.
Pretty basic stuff, either replaces the points and screws down in place of them, or maybe a simple replacement of the points plate. Then theres an exciter ring that slides down over the points cam.
There's 2 power leads to the ign system, one when cranking and one when in the "run" position. If you have power in the run position only, I'd start by checking my switch and go from there. IMHO the Dudraspark is one the best things I have done to my '65. In all the many Fords I've owned, I've only had to replace 1 box. When your Pertronix craps out, you wont be able to go to the nearest parts store and pick up a replacement...good luck.
I called Napa today to see if they made a coversion kit to move all the electronis to the inside of the distributor (78 dist. w/external modulator) and he seemed to think that there is no such thing made, all that is available is the kits to replace the points in the original distributors. any truth to this. if so i'm gonna quit looking. dutch
My pertronix kit worked great just remember to wire the thing as the diagram says and if you use a 12volt coil in this system does your truck have a resistor wire? With my coil and pertronix setup the directions advised to remove it as it cuts down voltage to the coil! let us know what you find!
