Things were going really well this afternoon. I was ready to mount the other rear axle. Miscalculated a bit. The spring mounts on the replacement axle (1991) are spaced closer than on the '96 axle. ARGGGG!!!! The front axle fit (also from the '91). Why shouldn't the rear. Luckily, I have another axle from a '93, which I have measured to ensure it fits this time. But I had to start over prepping this one. It's now ready to come off, but I have to wait until my next day off to finish the swap. NUTS! I only have Thursday off this week. Otherwise I'll have to wait until next Monday.
I would venture a guess that the 1991 was a chassis cab F-350 which has a narrower rear frame width. The front section is the regular width but they narrowed the rear for fitment of aftermarket decks or boxes.
The mounts are welded and I don't have a welder. Both trucks were listed as chassis cabs on the decal on the door frames. I assumed since both were stamped the same, they should be the same. The '91 does have narrow springs and both the '93 and '96 have 3" wide springs. If I'd been thinking, I'd have made a quick measure and saved myself some trouble, but no, not me.......
It could have been a lot worse. I also can't find the u-bolts for the front driveshaft. I know I've got them around somewhere, but I'm at a loss. NAPA, here I come.
I did find the bolts. At NAPA for $9. Anyway, I got home from work today and ripped the other axle off my trailer and got it hung on the truck. Tomorrow, she'll be operational!
Man are those things heavy. Of course the tractor wouldn't start, so I just hooked a rope on in and slung it over my shoulder and gave 'er the ol' heave ho. Took some doing, but I got it out from under the trailer and over to the truck. It's pretty nippy out this morning, but I think I'll get on it anyway.
Nope. Was reading -36 on my thermometer. I got the axle tightened up, shocks mounted, brakes, and driveshaft hooked up. Got to bleed the brakes and chase some threads on the u-bolts for the anti-sway bar. Unfortunately, I have to get the front driveshaft shortened a couple inches. Didn't know that. Time to call Jody.....
