Well after 50,000mi it happened to me before X-mas. Out in the bush working and I had to have my 2008 f350 deisel towed out of the bush on a flat deck. Embarrasing because there were 2 toyota tundras with me at the time. Egr valve stuck opened and had to get it replaced @ the nearest dealership. I have manly highway miles and only have used uls diesel. I know that the 6.0 have a lot of troubles with egr valves. I thought that ford had done their homework on the 6.4.Is this a problem with anyone else and do you Spartan tuned units had any trobles with egr?
I'm assuming you have the original EGR valve design correct? If so there is a newer version that is more reliable from what i understand. I don't believe the new valve starting being used until in later 2008 on the early 2009 model trucks.
Wow, don't hear of many EGR issues with this motor.
You say mostly highway miles, how many of them towing? Most here believe that you have to push these engines every once in awhile to keep the emissions controls free of gunk...
Have you been using any fuel additives with your truck? The reason I ask is because most EGR Valves that I'v seen that were bad don't look like the old 6.0L ones (full of chunks of carbon and heavy build up). They have actually been the opposite with a very light coating that causes the valve to stop being able to actuate properly. We can speculate all day as to why Ford changed the valve design but I believe a fair amount of the failed valves were slowly leaking coolant causing lubrication issues. Also after changing EGR Valves to the new design my truck's coolant level hasn't moved at all, it used to very slowly drop over the course of a month or so.
Also, not trying to sell anyone on the product, but after switching to opti-lube XPD i was able to keep my old style EGR Valve clean until the new designed one started being stocked at dealerships. There was about a 3 month delay in which no dealership had any EGR Valves during the part recall.
This makes sense as my EGR seems to be acting up (i'm on original version) and i'm slowly leaking coolant. Loosing about 5-6 oz now every 5K.
I remember you talking about the trouble you were having a while back. I wonder if you could unplug your EGR Valve Sensor when your key is in the ON position and get the truck to throw a CEL. That might give you enough argument to complain about driveability concerns and get your dealership to change it out.
thanks for the advice guys. I looked up on the net and there is a new replacement EGR valve over the old one. Unfortunatly they replaced mine with the old style again. I'm assuming that there must be a stock that they want to use up first. Sounds like these are a bi$%h to replace.
interesting. I have 29K on my truck no EGR issues at all. I have had a tad of splatter on the degass bottle but I know I was running pretty hot towing heavy in the summer.

You know its kinda interesting. My coolant slowly goes down and has done this till this winter. Now its not moving much but not sure why. I let it get down about 1/2" below the low line and its stopped. Not sure if this is because of the winter, different driving habits, or it just likes to get to that spot. The other thing i find interesting is i have hooked up the DashDaq and now monitor the EGR. The funny thing is it hardly ever opens unless i'm running the truck really hard. I think it has something to do with colder weather but not sure. Guess we will see when the weather warms back up if the EGR starts to work again. Maybe with the EGR staying closed most of the time its not allowing coolant to leave the cooling system. Anyway, truck still runs like a beast as it always has just another mystery to be solved.

EGR valve does not come in contact with coolant and therefore can't leak coolant. EGR = Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve.
From what I have read is that the EGR recycles close to 20 % of the exhaust gas through the 2 coolers into the engine again to help reduce pollutants into the air. Sawtooth , I ,m interested in the fact that you have the dashdaq and can monitor the valve. how long have you been watching?
only for the past 2-3 weeks. EGR does not cycle ever till i drive it very hard or tow something heavy. Very strange as i thought it would cycle all the time. I have a feeling in warmer weather this will change.
As for the coolant and EGR valve i thought there was a line that ran from the EGR valve to the coolant bottle. Is this not the case? Anyway, i've read where several people have changed out the valve and miraculously the coolant leak seems to disappear. How is this?
