I have a 66 mustang that I'm upgrading from 4 lug drums to 5 lug disks from 75 Granada. I want factory steel rims for an original look. I found a set at the right price near me. They are from a classic mustang.
Problem: the rims will not clear the center part of the hub as the Granada hub is larger. I can cut the center section of the rim down to fit and I think that'll be fine.
Someone suggested that the center hub MUST fit just right because the center part of the hub bears load from the rim. I thought the wheel studs held the weight and the center hub didn't mater as I've seen universal rims the I think don't fit the hub very tight. Also, I don't think rims in general fit tight against the hub.
When you install a tire, the rim actually seems to wobble a bit until you put on the lug nuts.
These rims are a great deal, and every local wrecking yard is out of rims that they claim would fit and they want 4x what these rims would cost me.
Anyone know if the rim inner lip MUST rest against the hub, or is the weight held by the lug nuts/studs.
Ok, I got an answer from a shop that modifies wheels. He said on a light weight car the rim doesn't need to transfer load to the center of the hub, the lug / lug studs will handle all the load.

NO. The steel center strengthens the wheel, that is why it is rolled. If it does not fit, then look at getting Bronco II, Ranger, or Explorer rims on the 5 x 4.5 pattern as their hub holes are bigger.
Hey, it's your car, but all the work to upgrade the axle and brakes and then you saddle yourself with the dogpoop 14x5 stock wheels?
Get some 17x9s on there with some decent rubber.
At least a 15x7.
OK, I had 14x7s, but even those were measurably better than the stockers....
Just a thought. I hate stockers, wheel covers, whitewalls....
I better stop...
Actually they are larger 15" rims but I'm trying to stay with a stock look, it's a 66 mustang sprint 200 w/ wire wheel hubcaps, and it really has a classy look to it. Kinda wanted to stay that way.
... well I was going to add a pic, but I don't see any button for that.
... OK, I put the pics in the album, check out the original hubcaps. That's the look I'd like to keep. Going from 14 to 15" I might be able to re-use these or find the newer 15" ones. I just really like that old original classy look.
