yellow wire if I remember correctly needs to go to a wire that has power all the time so your radio does not lose its memory

If you fish around the back of the dash, you'll find GREEN with YELLOW stripe - that's hot at all times. Modern head units use this for main power, in most cases this connects to the yellow wire on the head unit. If I'm reading your post correctly, the yellow wire you're asking about needs to connect to GREEN with YELLOW stripe behind the dash.

The factory radio pigtail is colored as follows:

YELLOW with ?? (can't remember) stripe = accessory power. Modern head units use this as a switched signal to tell the device to turn on. It's not powered all the time. This connects to the red wire on most modern head units.

BLUE with RED stripe = dash illumination. Some modern head units use this to signal the device display to dim when the headlights are on for night driving.

The original radio grounded through its dash mount.

so i ran a wire from my + lead on my battery directly to the yellow and red wires on my head unit. but that would mean that is is on all the time. so my question is now which wire does the red one go to so that is is only on when i turn on the truck? i know that you probably already anwserd it but i get confused easily and all those colors got me confused.
