I have a 02 F150 with 5.4 engine.I was wondering which modification gives the better mpg/power increase.I dont seem to hear alot about aftermarket hi flow cat. converters.Has anyone installed any on their truck? If so what brand and did you notice any power/mpg improvement.
They won't help where you want it most but may see a difference up near top RPM where you don't run it.
The stock equipment in good condition flows more than enough.
You may even feel a drop in torque in the normal pulling ranges.
To much money for little or no gains.
What a conundrum? You need to rephrase you question to ask: How about longtubes without cats? Now there's a real alternative. That's what I have, but I drive the other brand where there is a lot of availability to aftermarket parts. Have you even seen the inside of a cat? I don't believe there really is such a thing as a high flow cat. One may flow a little more than the next, but none of them are really high flow. Why do you think they get clogged so frequently? The holes in the cat are so small the diameter of the holes can only be measured in thousandths of an inch.

Thats not entirely true.
A set of long tubes can provide serious power gains through out the rev range due to better scavenge effect from the long tubes.
I have seen some results on the web where a guy put OBX long tube kit on his truck and only gained 6 peak hp and 6 peak tq. But below 3k rpm he gained nearly 20-30 ft lb and hp.
As long as you still have mufflers to provide some back pressure i think its okay.
You will end up loosing some low end power and tq if you go with a complete open system due to no back pressure.
